DLTK's Children's Stories
Penny the Piggy Bank
Once upon a time, in a cozy little home, lived a family of four – Sarah, her brother Max, their mom, and their dad. Sarah and Max were always eager to learn new things, and their parents loved teaching them valuable life lessons.
One day, their mom brought home a beautiful piggy bank named Penny. Penny was a vibrant shade of pink, with a charming smile that could brighten up anyone's day. Sarah and Max were immediately captivated by their new friend.
"Penny is here to help you both learn about the importance of saving money and making wise financial decisions," their mom explained.
As the weeks went by, Sarah and Max began saving their allowances in Penny. Every time they dropped a coin into the piggy bank, Penny's smile seemed to grow even brighter. Sarah and Max also noticed that the more they saved, the heavier Penny became.
One afternoon, as the siblings were sorting through their toys, Sarah had an idea. "Max, let's organize a garage sale to sell some of our old toys and books. We can save the money we earn in Penny!"
Max agreed, and they spent the entire weekend preparing for their sale. As their neighbors stopped by to browse, Sarah and Max shared their story about Penny the Piggy Bank and how they were learning to save money for their future.
Inspired by the siblings' enthusiasm, many people in their community began to adopt similar habits. The neighborhood started buzzing with the spirit of saving, and soon, piggy banks of all shapes and sizes appeared in every home.
One day, while Sarah and Max were playing in the park, they noticed a poster about a local animal shelter that needed help. Intrigued, they decided to visit the shelter and learn more about how they could contribute.
They were touched by the stories of the animals and the volunteers who cared for them. Returning home, they excitedly shared their experience with their parents and suggested using some of their savings to adopt a cat from the shelter. Their parents, beaming with pride, agreed that it was a great idea.
Sarah and Max carefully opened Penny, counted their savings, and set aside a portion for the adoption. They returned to the shelter and adopted the most adorable orange tabby cat, which they named Copper.
When they brought Copper home, they introduced him to Penny. Copper immediately took a liking to the piggy bank, often curling up beside it during his naps. Copper became a cherished member of their family, and Penny's smile seemed to shine even brighter.
Over time, Sarah and Max learned not only about saving and spending wisely but also about the value of giving back to their community. They continued to support various causes, always cherishing the lessons Penny the Piggy Bank had taught them.
And as for Penny, her joyful smile never faded. She remained an ever-present reminder in Sarah and Max's lives, encouraging them to make wise financial choices and to always remember the importance of giving back.
Through Penny the Piggy Bank's guidance, the siblings grew into responsible, generous, and financially savvy adults, inspiring many generations to come. And as for Copper, he remained their loving and faithful companion, always reminding them of the power of kindness and the joy of having a furry friend by their side.
A note from Leanne: This story was inspired by life at our house. Sarah and Max (the children in the story) were actually the names of our cats. Max was an orange tabby we adopted from the humane society using the charity savings our real children saved up in their piggy banks -- Penny and Pippin.
