Walrus Shapes Craft

This walrus is an easy paper craft to help young children learn about circles, half circles and triangles.  See if you can count how many of each shape there are in the craft.

Materials:

• paper,
• scissors,
• printer,
• glue,
• OPTIONAL:
  • something to color with (crayons, paint, markers, etc)

Instructions:

• Print template of choice. You can use the walrus outline template as a guide for the kids when they're putting it together or you can let them arrange the pieces on their own.
• Color the template pieces. Walruses are shades of brown and maybe a little grey. You can spend some time looking at photos of real walruses before you start coloring.
• Cut out the template pieces.  This may require adult assistance.  If you have a beginning user of scissors, let them cut out the easy (large) pieces while you cut out the harder ones.
• Glue the pieces together:
  • Glue the eyes to the top of the large circle (head).
  • Glue the eyebrow half circles above the eyes (these are the two, small half circle shapes).
  • Glue the tusks (triangles) underneath of the large, half circle muzzle (mustache).
  • Glue the muzzle onto the head.
  • Glue the nose onto the center of the head (overlapping the muzzle a little)
       
  • If you get stuck, use the small image at the top of this page or the walrus outline template to give you an idea of how it goes together.
  • If you are working with a large group of children, you may wish to pre-make an example to display during craft time.

Templates:

• Close the template window after printing to return to this screen.
• Set page margins to zero if you have trouble fitting the template on one page (FILE, PAGE SETUP or FILE, PRINTER SETUP in most browsers).
