Each week we have a
special "letter of the week".
During the week, we make crafts that feature the
letter of the week and practice the upper and lower cases of the letter.
WHAT WE DO - ACTIVITIES: During the week
we're learning about a particular letter (in this case the Letter P), we'll often do an
activity celebrating that letter. One idea for the letter P is having a party.
This can be a simple, family only, party or one where a couple of friends are
invited. The child should be encouraged to plan the party themselves. It
should include food, drinks, activities and crafts that start with the letter P.
Some suggestions are potato chips, Pepsi, pickles, pears, peanuts, pin the tail on the
pony (ok, it looks like a donkey, but we can imagine!) and any of the crafts on this page.
WHAT WE DO - CRAFTS: Instead of using crayons use
paint for your crafts. During the week try different types of paint and different
methods of painting. For instance... finger painting, brush painting, sponge
painting, tempra paints, water colour paints, and toothbrush painting (flick paint from an
old toothbrush with your finger... a good way to do snow falling). You can even
make your own paint (this simple recipe
is non-toxic and is as fun for the kids to stir up as it is for them to use... be careful
though as the colours can stain clothing).
For even younger kids, try pudding paint (two P's!!)
WHAT WE DO - RECYCLING: Making recycled paper is
half craft/half recycling and is fun for older kids (Age 5+). I've found that
children younger than that don't enjoy it as much as there is a fair amount of waiting
time between the start of the project and the finished paper. They also don't quite
grasp the concept of recycling or the environment. Anyways, it's lots of fun and a
few sheets of the finished paper can be put together as gift notepaper for mom or grandma
or it can be turned into cards by the children for a special occassion. |
